Niagara Escarpment Waterfalls Hikes

These are some of the best known waterfalls along the Niagara Escarpment from Dundas to Niagara Falls itself. While Niagara Falls is by far the best known area falls and perhaps the most spectacular, there are dozens of other lovely waterfalls along the Escarpment. Hamilton alone has some 15 waterfalls on the horseshoe-shaped section of the Niagara Escarpment that rims the city. Most of these are as high as a 3 to 5 storey building and one is almost as high as Niagara Falls.

While we haven’t visited them all, some claim there are as many as 70 waterfalls on the Escarpment although a number of them are very small. Some are cascading falls while others have multiple falls -an upper and a lower falls.

Toronto Hiking presents the best of these waterfalls in this series of waterfalls hikes in Southern Ontario.  Each of these hikes visit at least three or more waterfalls and may require some short driving between falls. For each falls there is a hike that takes in some of the features around each falls and visits the falls along the way. Short videos are available for most of the waterfalls.

WATERFALL TYPES

Cascade: The vertical drop is broken into a series of steps which causes the water to “cascade” down the incline.

Classical: The height and crest width are nearly equal.

Curtain: The height is notably smaller than the crest width resembling a wide “curtain”.

Ribbon: The height is notably greater than the crest width and the stream forms a thin “ribbon” of water.

Caution!

The areas around these waterfalls are dangerous places. The gorges can be very deep and it’s a long way down to the rocks below. Many of the falls have no guard rails or fences to keep you back. You can walk right to the edge of the crest of waterfalls that plunge down into the gorge below. It is wise to keep back from the edge and to keep children and family pets well under control. If viewing from below the falls, remember that many of the rocks you are walking over once were at the crest of the falls. While rocks don’t fall that often, they do fall so be aware.

You need to exercise caution near any waterfalls. Your life can be at risk!
