THE HOGG'S FALLS AREA:

hoggs-fallsIn the steep-sided and narrow upper Beaver Valley can be found what is considered to be one of Grey County’s best-kept secrets. A short walk brings you to where the Boyne River cascades 6 m over the rock face to form a sheer and shimmering curtain of water.

A face of hard caprock keeps the falls from eroding. There is a suprising absence of fallen rock at the bottom of the falls indicating the falls consists of dolostone from top to bottom. The water level is reasonable most of the year. The falls is sometimes known as Hogg's Falls.

Only small traces remain of William Hogg's long-ago mill with much of the land today reclaimed by the forest. The foundation is clearly visible about 50 m upstream. Hogg’s kin were millers in several Ontario communities including Hogg’s Hollow In Toronto. The site is now protected as a forest reserve managed by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.

The clear waters of the river abound with speckled trout and other species and fishing is permitted, in season, within the 83 hectares of posted public lands. The area below the falls is very popular with fishermen and I've never been there when I haven't seen fishermen in the river below the falls.

HOGG'S FALLS AREA WALKING TRAILS:

Bruce Trail, Hoggs Falls Lower Side Trail, Hoggs Falls Upper Side Trail. For a map of area trails, click on the Trail Map icon above.

hoggs-falls-fishingFishing at the base of Hogg's FallsFrom the Northern parking lot, you can take the Hoggs Falls Upper Side Trail south and then east to Hoggs Falls. Past the falls, you can continue on this trail until it meets the Bruce Trail. Then head left (west) until you meet the Hoggs Falls Lower Side Trail. Take this side trail north to meet the Upper ST. Continue on the Upper Side Trail back to the parking lot.

From the trail map you can see that there are other options to lenthen or shorten the walk as desired. Going further north along the Bruce Trail takes you to Eugenia Falls. If you park by the lower roadside parking area, follow the Side Trail about 200 m to the falls. Then you have various options to lengthen the walk.

FOR THE ADVENTUROUS ONLY:

Just downstream from the falls, there is a path that leads down to the Boyne River. Most of the fishermen use this path to walk out into the river to fish. It can be a bit steep and slippery but it's not a huge challenge.
