ToHi WATERFALL RATINGS

Overall Rating: Walter's Falls = B

Waterflow: A -year round flow
Falls Size: B - < 15 m
Aesthetics: C -the original falls seems to be buried under the dam

THE WALTER'S FALLS AREA:

Walter’s Falls is located on private property in the tiny village of Walter’s Falls. There is a viewing platform where Walter’s Creek plunges 14 m over the escarpment. It’s hard to see what is left of the original waterfalls when a dam structure has been built on top of the crest to control the water flow. This was somewhat of a disappointment after the other six “magnificent” falls and the view is not that great.

Named for the pioneer John Walter and his family, the quaint settlement developed around the gristmill. A new large resort has opened adjacent to the falls. The dam keeps a good water supply year round. The falls is also called Walters Falls.

WALTER'S FALLS AREA WALKING TRAILS:

Bruce Trail, Walter's Creek Side Trail. For a map of area trails, click on the Trail Map icon above.

walters-fallsSmall lake above the fallsThe Bruce Trail loops around the falls. Combining this trail with the Walter's Creek Side Trail, you can make a 4.7 km loop around the area. The Bruce Trail passes through the parking lot of the new Falls Inn as the trail heads upstream along the edge of the escarpment and begins to climb. Soon you will see all that is left of the original sawmill. If the trail feels spongy in this area, it is due to the accumulation of sawdust from the old mill. The trail crosses Grey Road 29 where it enters a cedar forest, crosses over a stream and climbs a small hill. Heading north, the trail skirts a farm field and enters a forested area where the Walter's Creek Loop Access Trail exits to the west. Continue straight ahead on the main trail as the trail descends a series of switchbacks to reach the creek's edge. The trail crosses the Holland-Sydenham Townline where it enters the Walter's Falls Management Area. Remaining creekside, the trail passes through an attractive forested area with beech stands where it soon meets the Walter's Creek Side Trail. Turn right on the side trail as the trail crosses the creek and climbs out of the valley into a pine plantation. Soon we meet the Bruce Trail once again. Turn right onto the Bruce Trail which soon crosses Grey Road 29 again and follows beside it over the Holland-Sydenham Townline. The trail descends into the river valley and passes through a cedar forest along the creek. The trail climbs the slope and leaves the woods to cross the bridge back to the parking lot at Walter's Falls.

FOR THE ADVENTUROUS ONLY:

Following the Bruce Trail past the waterfalls downstream, you will see a spot where you can climb down into the gorge. The gorge is fairly dense with vegetation and is rocky but with care you can make your way back to the base of the falls.
